Why do forest medicines still feel taboo?

Dear Tribe,

Why is it that when we speak of cacao, mushrooms, or sacred roots from the forest, we still feel the need to whisper? We live in a world where pharmaceuticals are normalized — even when disconnected from the body’s natural intelligence — while the earth’s original remedies are seen as “alternative”, unscientific, or worse, dangerous. But the truth is: Forest medicines were our first medicines. They’ve been guiding human healing for millennia — not just treating symptoms, but restoring harmony between body, mind, and spirit.

So why the taboo?

The Root of the Mistrust

  • Colonial narratives dismissed Indigenous knowledge as superstition.
  • Scientific reductionism stripped these medicines of their spirit, focusing only on isolated compounds.
  • Modern capitalism often rebrands them without honoring their origin stories.

The result? A society that fears what it doesn’t understand. But something is shifting.

A Return to the Sacred

More of us are awakening to the wisdom of the forest. We’re remembering that medicine can be soft, ceremonial, even delicious. That cacao can open the heart. That mushrooms can reconnect us to joy, clarity, and the unseen. At The Amazon Apothecary, we believe healing is not taboo. It’s a birthright.

What’s Next

In the coming weeks, we’ll be diving deeper into these questions:

  • What exactly is a “non-ordinary” state of consciousness?
  • Can cacao and mushrooms be used safely for everyday wellness?
  • How can we honor these medicines without appropriating them?

Expect recipes, rituals, stories, and science — always rooted in reverence. May you commune with the mycelial cosmos, and sip the forest one sacred drop at a time.

Mush love,

Nicole
